Presentation of Mary at the Temple

Tintoretto, Presentation of Mary at the Temple, 1552-1553, Oil on canvas, 429 x 480 cm, Venice, Church of the Madonna dell'Orto

The work represented the outer part of the shutters and is dominated by a majestic staircase where Mary’s ascent is mirrored, almost cinematographically, by the other women. The episode of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, taken from the Apocryphal Gospels and the Feast of the Church, sees Mary as a child climbing a steep curved staircase on whose top the priest awaits the little saint. Even Titian had already represented the same theme, which Tintoretto undertook to overcome in his version, enhancing the scenographic effect with the steep climb and the profile of the young woman silhouetted against the sky.
